Summer Sun Protection

Constant sun exposure is one of the top causes of increased risk of skin cancers, premature aging, sun spots and wrinkles.

People can get too much sun exposure simply by being outside, even without sunbathing, so for many people, protecting their skin has become a daily habit.

Sunscreen is No. 1,” esthetician Sigrid Yorke said.

Various sun protection products are the front line of defense that Yorke recommends for all her clients.Client Kaye McCaskill said she used an intense pulse laser to get rid of sun damage spots. Now she wants to prevent further problems.

“I’m able to manage my outside with good sunscreen,” McCaskill said.

Defense against the sun starts with sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or better, Yorke said. They serve as a chemical barrier which absorbs and disperses ultra violet light.

“Then you have sun blocks which act as a physical barrier, and they reflect the UVA and UVB light away from them,” she said.

New sun block products are an answer to a common complaint of slimy sunscreen. The new products are “more fluid and micronized so that you get a more sheer application,” Yorke said.

She recommended antioxidant serums that come in liquid form and offer eight times more protection when used under sunscreen around the face and neck – “which helps prevent ultraviolet light damage by removing the free radical damage caused by UV light.”

Other products combine sun protection with makeup.

“They have a makeup in one and a little bit of sunscreen as well,” Yorke said.

She cautioned that chemical sunscreens break down after about 80 minutes. Swimmers should use waterproof or water-resistant screens and will need to reapply it more often.

Experts recommend applying the lotions 20 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. Clothing with sun protection factors and broad-brimmed hats are also a valuable protection for skin.

Beauty Sleep

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

How important is preparing your skin for bed.VERY.Consider this.

Night time is when our bodies do all of there repair work. This includes the skin.So at night you want to cleans your skin, remove all traces of make up and/or sunscreen.

Apply either a repair or restorative active night product containing Retinoids of Glycolic acids.Or use a nourishing/hydrating type night cream.Like Yonka Phyto 58, Eminence Mango night cream.Skin Ceuticles Retxturizing Activator serum.

Always use a good eye cream(cosmedex eye believe, Yonka Phyto Countour) and Lash MD. to restore and lengthen your eyelashes.

You should also consider not eating past 7pm.This is not only good for your waistline, but if your body is busy digesting a late night snack or dinner it will not get all the benefits of a good night rest.Make sure you get 7 to 8 hours of uninterupted sleep. Now thats my take on beauty rest.

Pre Menstrual & Menopausal Acne Tips

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Skin care definitely consists of a balancing act.  What is the situation on-hand showing us.  Am i oily/dryer etc…  Many of us hope one cream, one cleanser will work 365 days a year.

Yet our skin changes with climate, diet, stress and hormones etc.  If beautiful skin is your goal, you must keep on hand a variety of skin care products to address the needs of your ever-changing skin.

I often recommend  using my favorite exfoliating cleanser (and use myself), Bion Glycolic Cleanser, the week before your period, for acne/oily skin. As skin tends to get oilier 7 to 14 days before menstruation.  You may also need to lighten up on your moisturizer.  I love Skinceuticals B5, it is very hydrating, yet liquid.

One of my new favorite finds and recommendations to my clients with hormonal acne is Eminence 8 Greens Serum and 8 Greens Whipped Moisturizer.  It contains natural plant estrogen’s and does wonders to prevent hormonal acne.

Another quick fix is Bion Green Tea Mask does great as a post-treatment and weekly mask during these times.

Heat and oily skin

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Although we’re really enjoying the hot summer weather, it does tend to make the skin get oilier. In these conditions, skin is usually happier when you’re using a foam cleanser. Yonka gel nettoyant is one of my favorites. Not all foam cleansers are eye friendly, but this one is. It foams and feels light, but still takes off that stubborn eye makeup, a nice combination.

If you wear a lot of sunscreen (and since it’s summertime, I sure hope you’re extra careful about applying sunscreen), just be mindful to exfoliate more often. If you haven’t tried it, Blinc Resurf.a.stic is a great choice. It’s super easy and does a great job sweeping off dead cells that can lead to clogged pores. I also love Bion Glycolic Cleanser for those folks who get super oily, like I do. It just gives a great clean feeling, without stripping the skin, plus the glycolic acid also helps rid the skin of dead cells too.

Summer Skin Care

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I recently went on vacation and it took me almost as long to pack my cosmetics as it did to pack my clothes. Why? Well, I’m definitely a tad high maintenance in the clothes realm, too, but my whole career is about beautiful skin. So it’s a given I know better than to overdo it in the sun. Like most people, I believe that a bit of color make us look better, but we now know that the fleeting glow of a tan comes at a pretty steep cost. Like any skin loving 21st century woman would, I prepared myself to do the great faux bronze look and protect all of the time and energy I’ve already invested in fighting Father Time, and into my trusted cosmetic bag went:

SkinCeuticals C E Ferrulic  which was the very first thing that went on my face each morning. This was followed up with Skin Ceuticals SPF 30  on my face and Skinceuticals SPF 45  everywhere else. Then my face got a nice dusting of Eminence Minerals, which I also brought along in my bag. In the strong Bahamian Sun, I wasn’t taking any chances. I reapplied the every hour to make sure I would not burn. Let me tell you, I saw a crazy amount of sunburns. I was shocked that with all we know about sun (uh, skin cancer anyone??), so many people were just throwing caution to the wind. Quite a few of those vacationers are going to be spending time at dermatologist appointments in the future. I just might be on another cruise!

In the evenings, I’d get back to my room and shower all the sunscreen off and apply Fake Bake  and Yonka Tan Prolonger. I alternated those each night. I’d also use Glow Minerals new Bronzing Gel  to recreate a fresh tan. Then we would all meet up for dinner. Everyone around me was red and complaining of sunburns and/or peeling. And there I was getting darker by the day, as I was building up my “faux glow”. By the end of our week long journey, I was the darkest, no peeling, no burn. It was actually amusing. Most importantly I kept my skin free of ultraviolet damage. I had great fun and I still got my share of required vitamin D.

One last thing I should also mention. I took Yonka Gommage  with me to make sure I could keep my complexion clear, since I knew I’d be making such heavy use of sun screen. Using so much sunscreen can wreak havoc on you if you are oily. But with Yonka Gommage, my skin stayed clear. Most importantly, it’s such a gentle way to exfoliate. And it didn’t make my skin more photosensitive, as harsh scrubs, enzymes or acid exfoliants could have. It’s a must have for summer smooth skin.

Betty Beauty: paraben-free, amonium-free hair dye for your who-ha.

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
More than a year ago our dear friends, who we’ll call ‘the beauty insiders,” introduced us to bettybeauty: hair dye for the hair down there. The beauty insiders are always way ahead of their time. We tend to be more traditional.
“Planet-friendly pink pubic hair dye?… The freaks will love it!” was our immediate reaction. Our second reaction was, ‘Hope it stays in business until we start seeing grey down there cause I am never putting anything hot pink near my who-ha.” But the beauty insiders begged, pleaded, and, eventually offered us Auburn.
Today is a rare snow day here in North Carolina. We cooked. We caught up on looming, needy emails and organizational tasks. We watched the inauguration. We cried for Obama and applauded Michele’s style. And we dyed our pubic hair auburn.
Being of Italian descent something as playful as deep dark rich red has never been anywhere near the neighborhood of our who-ha’s. Now we can’t figure out why we waited so long. This is tremendous fun, simple, body-image altering, and every woman should try it. If however you count yourself as a member of the grey-hair-down-there club, we assume you will read that ’should’ as a ‘must.’
Bettybeauty was created by the same singular Renaissance woman Nancy Jarecki who also happens to be the creative inspiration behind the E! network, several films, and a soon to be published book on facing adversity. Her husband also invented moviefone so we love her several times over. In case dying your hair down there sounds too odd, challenging, or simply unnecessary I’ll provide detailed, calming information below and also ask you, when was the last time you made yourself into a new woman? Betty is the first step.

YonKa Creme 11

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
YonKa’s Creme 11 contains enough bioactive ingredients to recreate the face of a woman who has used only dial soap and no moisturizer her entire life.  Suddenly she too can have skin reminiscent of wealthy French women who are born knowing coveted skincare secrets. Creme 11 is the first step in repairing and re-hydrating traumatized (read uncared-for) skin. With consistent use we can all have the coveted skin of said french women who look no older than 30 on their 50th birthdays.

If your skin is prone to redness or sensitive in anyway this is the product that will transform it into glowing, moist, healthy skin.  Creme 11 counts an anti-depressant, St John’s Wort, as an ingredient so it’s no surprise that my face jumps for joy with every application.

Other interesting ingredients include:

Matricaria Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Yarrow Extract, Horse Chestnut Extract, Whick Hazel Extract, Horsetail Extract, Saint Johns Wart Extract, Balm Mint Leaf Extract, Gentian Extract, Sage Leaf Extract, Marshmallow Root Extract, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Soybean Oil.
